Flight controller Andy Maloney completes new Artemis line up

The final piece of the Artemis SailGP jigsaw slotted neatly into place today with the confirmation that Kiwi sailor Andy Maloney has joined the new team as flight controller ahead of Season 6 of SailGP, which kicks off in Perth, Australia in a month’s time.

Maloney joins the new Swedish-flagged squad after spending Season 5 on flight control for Martine Grael’s Brazilian Mubadala syndicate. Prior to that he was the long-time flight controller for Peter Burling’s New Zealand Black Foils crew.

Maloney is a three-time America’s Cup winner with Emirates Team New Zealand and a key member of the Kiwi campaign to defend the Cup for the third consecutive time at AC38 in Naples in 2027. His move to Artemis sees him join fellow Emirates Team New Zealand sailors Nathan Outteridge (helmsman) and Chris Draper (wing trimmer) aboard the Swedish F50, completing a trio that – on paper at least – is one of the league’s most potent ‘speed groups’.

Outteridge welcomed the signing – highlighting both the personal connection and competitive upside.

"Andy and I have shared some incredible moments on the water," Outteridge said. "We’ve both raced in SailGP before, but this is the first time we’ll be on the same team for the season. Andy’s one of the sharpest flight controllers in the game and having him on board gives us a huge advantage. I’m excited to sail with him again - this time, with Artemis."

Maloney completes the Artemis SailGP roster alongside Outteridge, Draper, strategist Julia Gross (SWE), and grinders Brad Farrand (NZL) and Julius Hallström (SWE).

For the New Zealander, the move represents a fresh challenge with a team on the rise.

"Joining Artemis SailGP is a really exciting step," Maloney said. "There’s a clear vision here, and the chance to help shape a new team is something I’m really motivated by.

"I’ve raced both with and against Nathan and Chris plenty of times, and now teaming up with them again - this time in SailGP - feels like the right challenge at the right time.

"I’m proud of my journey in the league so far and now it’s time to bring that experience into Artemis and help build something world-class."
