Now with more power

Two-speed and three-speed electric versions of Ronstan's Orbit winch are now available.

When Ronstan combined the high-quality internal componentry of Andersen Winches with their own hi-tech, forward-thinking approach to hardware, the result was the Orbit range of lightweight alloy winches. This design scooped a joint category win in the 2023 DAME Awards thanks to its innovative QuickTrim self-tailer, which enables lines to be eased instantly without removing the rope from the self-tailing jaws or removing the handle – a stand-out innovation when it comes to fine-tune adjustments.

With E1 single-speed electric options already available, Ronstan’s most recent development sees the two largest Orbit models, the two-speed and three speed 45QT and 50QT, now available as E2 two-speed electric versions. Conversion kits are available for existing units.

Offering the fastest line speed in the range, these Orbit models are ideal in situations where rapid line retrieval is called for. With the new E2 motors, fast sheeting at low loads and low speed sheeting for higher loads happen at the push of a button. For very fast line retrieval a third gear can be activated manually on the three-speed model.

Designed for line sizes of 8-14mm, the 45QT and 50QT are suitable for yachts up to around 14m.

Niels Bramsen, Ronstan Denmark’s design engineer, explains that E2 has been a natural step in expanding the Orbit range. ‘The E2 option brings not only power but also flexibility at a point in the range where this particularly benefits performance,’ he says. ‘Operation feels effortless thanks to the push-buttons that are used to switch between the electric speeds. The result is very smooth and precise line control.’

It sounds perfect, then, for racers looking for the extra edge; for shorthanded sailors needing efficiency; or for cruisers seeking an effortless solution.

The same innovative features found across the E1 models have been adopted in the E2 range, central to which is the illuminated “intelligent” push buttons which not only enable that seamless switch between gears but can also indicate any issues through flashing sequences for precise and immediate troubleshooting.

A host of built-in functions safeguards the longevity of the winch – as well as lines - all of which are European engineered, manufactured and wellproven across the Orbit and Andersen Winch ranges. For instance, an integrated load-sensing controller automatically halts operation if it detects the pull-load maximum has been exceeded, or, similarly, if the continuous run time exceeds 10 minutes.

Operation resumes once safe parameters have been reached. The motor itself, developed from the Andersen components used in the existing range, includes a thermal cut-out to prevent any potential overheating due to excessive load. While the button has a hinged safety cover, if for any reason it is already depressed when the power is turned on, accidental start protection kicks in to prevent the winch starting.

One feature, however, that is unique to the Orbit Winch E2 models is a mechanical torque limiter, as Bramsen explains: ‘We found that a solution was necessary to safeguard the winch’s internal componentry from the high torque W that is produced by the powerful motor and gearbox combination. The size of gearbox is carefully matched for optimal line-speed and efficiency with each model but in addition to this, for the E2 models, we worked with the gearbox supplier on fine-tuning the integrated torque limiting feature to the application.

‘This torque limiter function limits the output from the gearbox and adds an extra layer of safety to protect the winch from high torque which may occur unexpectedly, for example on start-up or if ropes become snagged when retrieving at high speed. It acts like a fuse in a circuit in that it will slip when overloaded, then re-engage again once the load is back within the appropriate parameters.’

Further enhancing performance is the design of the drum itself. Again, taken from the well-proven existing Orbit and Andersen winches, the E2 drums incorporate Ronstan’s Power Ribs structure, machined with a non-abrasive surface and carefully designed to maximise line grip - meaning fewer turns – and significantly reducing line wear.

While packing all this efficiency and functionality into the design and making use of Andersen’s uncompromising gear and motor componentry, it was crucial that the E2 models remain as light as possible. This has been achieved thanks to close design collaboration between the Australian-based Ronstan design team and their Ronstan Denmark colleagues.

Keeping installation straightforward was also key, made possible thanks to the integrated control box within the motor. As with all Orbit Winches, 12v or 24v options are available.
