I caught up with La Roche-Posay Racing Team CEO Stephan Kandler a week after the second 38th America’s Cup preliminary regatta in Naples to gauge his reaction to the syndicate’s podium performance.

But for a couple of capsizes during the fleet race series, Quentin Delapierre’s crew – which features co-helm Diego Botín, along with trimmers Jason Saunders and Florian Trittel – could well have been the ones that faced the Italians in the match race final.

Kandler declared himself and the team ‘happy’ with the result, but also admitted they were genuinely disappointed not to have made it into the final.

“We were close to getting there,” he said. “Some unforced errors got in the way. On the whole, though, from my point of view it was a strong performance – and a great message for the whole team and to our fellow competitors.”
