Pip Hare Joins Canada Ocean Racing for The Ocean Race Europe

Canada Ocean Racing has given a significant boost to its Be Water Positive Ocean Race Europe campaign with the addition of British offshore sailor Pip Hare, who will sail alongside skipper Scott Shawyer in the four-person crew for the 2025 edition of the race this summer.

Hare, well-known for her performance in the 2020–21 Vendée Globe and more recently for her composed handling and supreme seanship following a dismasting in the Southern Ocean during the 2024 edition, brings a depth of experience that will be central to the team’s development in the coming months.

"She’s a ruthless competitor with a huge heart," Shawyer says. "Pip brings a rare mix of tenacity, experience, and humanity to the team. Her ability to dig deep and lead through action will be a huge asset to us."

Hare’s role will be hands-on from the outset. As a watch leader, she’ll contribute directly to the team’s strategy, seamanship, and onboard decision-making as they tackle the multi-leg Ocean Race Europe course. For Hare, it’s a timely opportunity to shift gears after four years of solo-focused IMOCA campaigning.

"I’m really excited to be joining Scott and the Canada Ocean Racing team for The Ocean Race Europe this year," Hare says. "Having been fully focused on solo sailing for the last four years, it’s going to be a great change of pace to join a team and bring my own experience to a more powerful force.

"The Ocean Race Europe offers a challenging, fast-paced course. We’re expecting diverse conditions and relentless competition across the different legs. Scott has bought a boat with incredible pedigree, and I’m looking forward to working with the Canada Ocean Racing team to unlock its full potential on the race track."

The timing of Hare’s arrival coincides with a pivotal transition for the Canadian team as they prepare to take possession of a new-generation foiling IMOCA, which will serve as the foundation for Shawyer’s broader campaign toward the 2028–29 Vendée Globe.

The Ocean Race Europe, with its mix of coastal and offshore legs and its emphasis on high-performance crew dynamics, offers the team an ideal environment to build cohesion, refine systems, and gain hard miles under race pressure. Hare’s experience, both solo and in a team setting, will play a central role as Canada Ocean Racing continues to evolve.

I didn't think I was going to be, but somehow I've found myself hooked on the adventure story that is the 2025 Transat Parec, where a fleet of 19 mixed sex Beneteau 3 crews are fighting it out on a racecourse that takes them from Concarneau, France across the Atlantic to St Barths.
